RES Community Updates
2023-2024

Reminder - March 22nd is a Half Day for Students
Just a quick reminder that tomorrow, March 22nd, is a half day. Students will be dismissed at 11:30!
Solar Eclipse - Calendar Adjustments
On April 8, 2024, our region will experience a total solar eclipse! This is a rare experience that has garnered a great deal of interest. In addition to interest, there are safety and traffic concerns as the eclipse will begin at dismissal time. As a proactive measure, MMUUSD’s plan is to shift our early release on Monday, April 8th instead of April 10th, and take the day off instead of having an early release.
- No school April 8th
- Regular School day April 10th
K - 4 RES Spring Concert: April 15th at MMU!
Health Office Update
The CDC has updated COVID-19 guidance to include the removal of the 5 day isolation period with a positive case of COVID-19. The Vermont Department of Health plans to follow the guidance as
well. COVID-19 is now being treated as other respiratory illnesses. As a result, MMUUSD will no longer require COVID positive students or staff to isolate for 5 days. District guidelines do remain in place - If you are sick, please stay home. Please read this updated link for our District Illness Guidelines. The District has a supply of masks and antigen tests if requested.
This guidance below provides practical recommendations and information from the CDC to help people lower risk from a range of common respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, flu, and RSV.
Norovirus Prevention Toolkit
Protect Your Family and School Community from Norovirus
This is the time of year when norovirus (sometimes called the “stomach bug”) is more common in Vermont. Norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea.
You can help keep your family and our school community healthy:
Wash hands often with soap and water. Remind your child to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the bathroom and before eating or making food. Hand sanitizer does not work well against norovirus!
Keep your child home for at least 24 hours after symptoms are gone. If your child is recovering from norovirus, staying home for at least 24 hours after all symptoms are gone can prevent norovirus from spreading to other students. Most people recover from norovirus in 1 to 3 days.
For more on norovirus and how to prevent it, visit HealthVermont.gov/norovirus.
FY 25 MMUUSD School District Budget Information
This has been an unprecedented 2024-25 budget development process due to significant changes made by the VT Legislature to the education funding systems well after most school district budgets had been prepared and warned. As a result, the law allows districts to move the date of the 2024-25 (FY25) budget vote and revise (FY25) budgets that were intended to be presented to the electorate on March 5th. The modifications made in the legislature and signed by the Governor would have resulted in a significant property tax rate increase in our District. Because of this, MMUUSD revised and reduced the FY25 budget by 5.5 million dollars (-8.38%) which was designated for important facilities upgrades and has moved its FY25 budget vote from March 5th to April 2nd. For more information around the FY 25 Budget, please check out the MMUUSD School Budget Flyer below, and consider attending the Budget informational meeting on March 28th at 6:00 pm at MMU.
Last Student School Day - June 18th
Planning for summer care and camps has become increasingly difficult for families over the past
several years as school cancellations due to weather, flooding and other emergencies have
extended the school year. In an effort to support families in effectively planning for the summer,
we are setting the last student day for this year on June 18th. Based on the number of
emergency school closures so far this year, we will meet our traditional number of 178 school
days. The state requires 175 student days. Therefore, if we have additional school closures,
MMUUSD will repurpose the student days for staff professional development and set the last
student day on June 18th. This is a practice that will continue in subsequent school years.

- February -
Winter is finally here..... last week
After a warmer then usual start, it feels as though winter was finally here for a bit! The students at RES enjoyed the brief winter stint this month, playing in the snow and on the skating rink while both last.
Kid's Heart Challenge: Thank you!
A huge thank you to everyone who supported this year’s Kids’ Heart Challenge at RES! We’re excited to announce that we’ve hit an all time record for donations! Together, our community raised over $11,000.00 to support the work of the American Heart Association. On Monday, 2/19, our school celebrated with a fun All-School Assembly in the gym. We had some special visitors join us for the event! Ticker (the AHA mascot) came back to RES, and four men from the UVM Men’s Ice Hockey Team joined us as well! We all danced and laughed and enjoyed the morning! A big heartfelt thanks to everyone, have a wonderful February Break!
Pickup Patrol
Starting March 11th, we will be using a system called PickUp Patrol to help us track dismissals. PickUp Patrol (PUP) will save us a great deal of time here in the office, reduce classroom interruptions and provide you with a convenient way to make changes to your children’s dismissal plans.
Most importantly, it will help us ensure that our students are safely dismissed to their correct after-school destinations.
Use the PickUp Patrol app for:
ATTENDANCE: Notify the school office when your child will be absent, arriving late or leaving early.
DISMISSAL CHANGES: Submit changes to your child’s regular dismissal plans.
For example:
Your child normally rides the bus, but is getting picked up today.
Your child is staying after for an activity.
How it works:
Your child's regular dismissal plan is entered into the system. This is called their Default Plan. Whenever you have a change to the Default Plan, you’ll submit it through the PickUp Patrol app. When the change is submitted, the school will be notified and your child’s teacher will relay the change to them. More information will be sent out when we return to school on March 6th.
S.T.E.A.M. Night Fun!
A big shout out to our Enrichment teacher Harmony Roll for organizing our 2nd ever S.T.E.A.M, and Chef Danielle for making home made pizza and treats. It was a huge success, and we are excited to continue to grow this event next year.
RES Community Volunteers
If you would like to help out and volunteer any amount of time here at RES we would be excited for you to join us! All volunteers need to complete THIS volunteer form before supporting classrooms, field trips, or other school events. The process can take a few weeks to be completed, so submit the form early (even if you are not planning on volunteering until later in the school year).

- January -
January is often a time for reflecting on the past while setting intentions for the future. The faculty and staff at RES came together in collaboration with several MMU students this past Martin Luther King Jr. day to review our own practices around inclusion and bias in conjunction with our District Priorities around Anti-bias/Anti-racism and Equity Efforts. Our focus for the morning was around creating visually affirming spaces for marginalized communities, in particular the LGBTQ+ community. As we continue to work on visibly inclusive environments, we greatly appreciate our student, family, and community partnerships!

Kids Heart Challenge Update
To spread awareness and build excitement around the Kids Heart Challenge, we are looking for any and all photos of your student(s) doing activities that help get their heart pumping. This might be when you are out skiing, going for a walk, playing sports, helping stack wood, shoveling, or any activity that gets the heart working!
We would love to take these photos and post them in the front hallway of our school to recognize students’ healthy heart habits! We’re so proud of our community!
Please feel free to send any photos via email to
Carl Ellerkamp carl.ellerkamp@mmuusd.org

Thank you all for your continued support! We have already raised over $2,800.00 !!!
New Playground Equipment Shed!
It is with great humility and appreciation that I share with you all the new playground equipment shed! This beautiful shed was donated by E+S Transportation and the Harrington family. We are going to work to build shelving and install organizers, and then move all recess equipment into the shed for all grades to easily access and teach healthy habits around independence and putting away/taking care of your own materials as a part of a community.
Student Belonging Survey
All students within the district in grades 3-12 will be provided an online survey at some point over the next two weeks. This brief (four question) online survey aims to collect data on student sense of belonging to inform our efforts to better support student well being. If you would like your student to opt out or if you have any questions, please reach out to Principal Jeremy Rector directly.
New Faces at RES
Jack O'Malley - Student Life Coordinator
Jack is replacing Carolyn Sommer, who has left for maternity leave and resigned her future position. We are excited to have Jack, and the expertise and experience he brings!
I'm excited to return to the RES community as the new Student Life Coordinator! Through my previous role at the Howard Center I spent a year supporting one student in Ms. Senning's 4th grade class and got to know many of you. As a recent recipient of a Master's in Applied Behavior Analysis, and aspiring BCBA, I'm ready to bring that training and my experience at the Howard Center with me to this role. I'm looking forward to supporting a wider range of students at RES and integrating myself into the wonderful school community once again.
Molly Kenny - 3rd Grade Spanish Immersion
Molly has been working at RES all year in the capacity of a long-term sub, and will be filling in for the remainder of the year for Rick Turvey, who has resigned for personal reasons.
I am very excited to become a part of the Richmond community! I grew up in Essex Junction, Vermont, and I have recently graduated from Quinnipiac University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master’s degree in teaching. I have wanted to be a teacher since I was in first grade. In my free time I love to read, be active, and spend time with friends and family.
Exciting District News - Jenn Cote hired as the Director of Special Services
The Mount Mansfield Unified Union School District is pleased to announce that Jenn Cote has accepted the MMUUSD Director of Special Services position for our district.
Jenn Cote earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science and her Master of Education in Special Education from Saint Michael’s College. Currently serving as the Principal at Underhill Central School since 2019, Jenn previously held the position of principal at Underhill ID School for one year and was a special educator in our District for 10 years.
Jenn is excited to transition into this new role within our school community and to continue her efforts in supporting MMUUSD staff, students and families.
Community Events!
Books sale is a hit!
Thank you to the RES Community for the amazing support of this year's Used Book Sale! On Friday, 12/8, kids came to the gym with their quarters and bought gently used children's books to bring home! The donations were wonderful! This year we also had several students participating in the RES Read-a-Thon, and we thank these students and those who donated to their challenge for their kindness and generosity! Together, our community raised over $1000.00. Money raised will be sent right back into the community - to support RES students and their families. Thank you all and GREAT JOB!

SMART - Gun safety at home
Safety is always an adult responsibility. Kids will be kids, so it’s always an adult’s responsibility to keep children safe. Always assume that curious or impulsive kids may find and touch an unsecured gun, even if they’ve been told not to. If a child handles a gun, a bad decision can quickly become a fatal one. Be SMART adults protect kids by making sure all guns are stored securely, which means they are inaccessible to kids, and by making sure children are never in the presence of unsecured guns.
This winter, Be
Secure all firearms in your home and vehicle
Model responsible behavior around firearms
Ask about the presence of firearms in other homes
Recognize the role of firearms in suicide
Tell your peers to Be SMART
Do you need to secure your firearm? Cable gun locks are available in our school office, stop by and pick one up!

- November -
Each year, the students of RES have enjoyed our RES Used Book Sale during the first week of December! Families throughout our community, at all grade levels, have been invited to look through their book collections at home and donate gently used children’s books to the sale. Then, RES kids have brought their coins to our sale and have purchased books, new to them, for a quarter. Money raised at this sale has always been given to a cause (or causes) that support the children and families in our Richmond Community. Kids will be celebrating a love of reading! We’re very excited to have our sale once again!
Here’s how it all will work!
- If you are interested in making book donations, send them to RES starting Monday, November 6th. You can leave your bags and boxes of books on the front porch. Please clearly label your donations “RES Used Book Sale”.
- Our Used Book Sale will be on Friday, December 8th. Kids can bring their quarters to school, and for each quarter, they can choose a book! We’ll send home reminders as the sale gets closer.
Last year, we began a tradition which we’d like to offer again this year. This is another opportunity to celebrate reading AND do additional community service during this holiday fundraiser! All students at RES are going to be invited to set a reading goal during the month of November. How many books do they think they can read in a month? Students will be asked to find “sponsors” who will be able to pledge any amount they wish to their student all-star reader, as they work towards these goals - and by the end of the event - all funds will be collected and delivered to RES.
This year, all of the money raised from our December 8th Used Book Sale and the November Read-a-Thon will be used to support the needs of students and families in our RES Community.
Community Volunteers
If you would like to help out and volunteer any amount of time here at RES we would be excited for you to join us! All volunteers need to complete THIS volunteer form before supporting classrooms, field trips, or other school events. The process can take a few weeks to be completed, so submit the form early (even if you are not planning on volunteering until later in the school year).
Music Room News
After the December break, we will begin playing recorders again in music class, using a program that I put together based on my favorite method book.
Each year, students request to take recorders home and to borrow copies of the music. Playing at home greatly encourages their musical growth. This year, in an effort to encourage practicing at home and to raise some funding for the music program, I am offering this opportunity.
There are options to purchase a USED RECORDER and a new method book (while supplies last!) or a NEW RECORDER with a new method book. The new recorders are curated by me and are designed to be easy to play with a more pleasant tone. It is the recorder we use in class. There is also the option, if there is already a recorder in your house, to order just the new method book.
Please fill out and return the attached form to me along with a check made out to RES by FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10th in an envelope. Students may place the orders in the mailbox outside my room or give them to their homeroom teacher.
Thank you for investing in your child’s musical growth!!

RES School Store!
In Enrichment, all 1st through 3rd grade classes have participated in creating a school store. They've been leaf printing on tote bags, napkins and dish towels. Through this project they have been learning about concepts such as cost, profit, advertising, merchandising, leaf identification, and further developing their process skills. Their wares are being sold at the two Open House events. The first night was a great success. Proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards purchasing new materials for the Enrichment Program. Classes will decide how best to use our profits. Please check out their work and support their efforts during the second night. You can find us in the Enrichment Room 5. Cash, Check, Venmo accepted.

Arrival:
To support the flow of traffic and the arrival of all students, please use the loop in front of the building for a quick drop off, and a quick hug or kiss goodbye. You can exit the vehicle if you would like to watch your student enter the building, but please don't use the loop if you would like to come in. If you are planning on entering the building, please park in the spots facing the highway. This is a space where you can comfortably leave your vehicle and not feel rushed. Thank you!
A reminder that school starts promptly at 7:50am. If you are dropping your student off, please be sure to leave enough time for traffic etc. to get here. If your student rides the bus and it arrives after 7:50am they will not be marked tardy.
Dismissal:
Your students safety is paramount to us here at RES. Throughout the pandemic we have developed many different dismissal procedures, to balance efficiency with safety. Recognizing that many more students are taking the busses (which we strongly encourage) and parent pickup is more organic then it had to be in the early years of the pandemic, we are going to tighten things up on our end with regards to parent pickup.
23-24 after school pickup procedure:
Preschool will be dismissed at 2:20, Kindergarten will dismiss at 2:35, and 1st - 4th grade will dismiss at 2:37. For parent pickup, either find a parking space along the bank facing the highway (to the right as you enter the campus) and walk to the front of the building or continue to the back of Camels Hump Middle School where you will be directed to the pickup loop as space becomes available. Please do not arrive prior to 5 minutes before your students dismissal time, this will help reduce traffic congestion.
PK families will continue to pick their children up directly from their classroom teachers.
K-4 families: once you park, you will need to walk up to the front of the building, and line up to sign out your student. We will have two lines; Ms. Woodruff will be signing out students in grades K-1 , and Ms. Roberge will be signing out students in grades 2-4. Please print your name on the sign out sheet next to your students name, and then your student will be released into your care.
Once you receive your student, please leave the front area to reduce congestion. If you are planning on staying after school to use the playground or to chat, please park in the lot facing the highway and not in the U in front of the building. This overall procedure will certainly help to ensure students are being dismissed to their caregivers, however, it will also possibly delay the pickup process slightly.
Please be mindful of others, and we greatly appreciate your patience and support!
Playground update
First off, thank you all for your tremendous support and participation in our fundraising efforts last year! As a community we were able to raise $10,000 toward our $50,000 goal. While we still have a ways to go, I did not want that to prevent us from moving forward, and we have been moving forward with our playground renovations! We will be fundraising all year to help pay for the work that is being done today, but in the meantime, we will be able to enjoy our new community play spaces!
The construction of our front K-4 structure was a bit delayed due to the miserable weather this summer, however, you may have noticed some gradual progress (and a lot of wood chips). Final construction of the front structure is set to begin on Monday, September 11th, and we should be ready to play before the following week! Additionally, much of the work has been completed on the new side Preschool structure, and it looks amazing. We still have a few features to add to this PK space, but make sure to come by and check it out.
Let's get the ground ready...
Add some wood chips
The equipment is here!
From the PTO
The RES PTO publishes a student directory each new school year. Students are listed by classroom, making this booklet a great resource for playdates, carpooling and other activities when you need to know who your student's classmates are.
In order to be included in the directory, we need your permission.
* Please respond by September 29th, 2023 for inclusion*
By providing your information below, you agree to be included in the 2023-24 RES Student Directory.

Welcome, we can't wait to see you!!
First off, I want to welcome you all to the 2023-2024 school year. It is important to acknowledge that families are going to be returning from the summer in different places, as Vermont and our local community has faced tremendous weather conditions and loss that has impacted people differently throughout our school community. With that, please know that Richmond Elementary School is a community who cares about one another, and we will support you and your student(s) to our fullest capacity. We are so excited to see you, and we can't wait for the first day of school!
For those who don't know me, here is a little bit about myself: I live in Underhill with my wife, three kids, and our dog, Nollie. This will be my fifth year serving as Principal of Richmond Elementary School, and I feel graced working in this building and with this community every day. I am a native Vermonter, and I have lived in the area most of my life. I love the outdoors, and I can often be found with my family mountain biking, camping, snowboarding, or at one of the kids' sporting events.
Take care these last few days of break, and please reach out any time if there is anything we can do to support you.

School Day Info
Arrival
- The student day at RES starts at 7:50 a.m.
- Students will be welcomed into their classrooms beginning at 7:30 a.m.
- To support families who need to drop off their students before the classrooms open, the library will be open for early arrivals between 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. This will be staffed by two support staff, and is intended to be a safety net for those who simply have to arrive before 7:30. Unfortunately, this early arrival time is not an option for our PreK students at this time, as we will not be in ratio to support PreK students within this time range.
- Preschool will dismiss at 2:20, Kindergarten will dismiss at 2:30, and 1st - 4th grade will dismiss at 2:37.
- All parent pickups will occur in the front drop off/pick up loop. For parent pickup, either find a parking space along the bank facing the highway (to the right as you enter the campus) and walk to the front of the building to wait, or continue to the back of Camels Hump Middle School where you will be directed to the pickup loop as space becomes available.
- Please do not arrive prior to 5 minutes before your student's dismissal time, this will help reduce traffic congestion.
- We ask that changes to your child’s normal routine be made no later than 1:30 in the day in order to minimize disruptions to classrooms.
- Buses will be fully loaded by 2:50 p.m. and drop off times will vary depending on location.
Food Services
We have upgraded our lunch system software to include dietary information* on our school lunch menus. This upgrade brings a new online portal for payment processing. You will need to register in this new portal.
After completing the registration process, you can easily add students to your account by filling out the add student dropdown menu on the dashboard's right-hand side. This portal will also allow you to see your student's purchase/lunch history.
- Under Vermont’s Universal School Meals Law, all public school students eat breakfast and lunch for free at school. Families are no longer required to complete any paperwork to receive free meals at school, but to continue this program, we need your assistance. Please take a few minutes to fill out the meal application form for your household. Click HERE to support the Universal Meals program.
